New Kitchen Compost Pail

I'm a big proponent of composting my kitchen scraps.  For a couple of years, I've been using a hand-me-down metal bowl and big plastic plate as a lid for collecting our kitchen scraps.  Every day or every other day, Sweet Hubby would take them out to the composter in the yard and dump them.  No matter how often the scraps were dumped, I'd still get little flies and a stinky kitchen.

My old metal bowl for collecting kitchen scraps (sans lid). It worked well except for the little flies and smells.

During one of his research forays into gardening, Sweet Hubby stumbled upon a counter-top kitchen compost pail with a lid and filter in an email from America's Test Kitchen.  We looked it over and were mightily impressed.  Plus, it was relatively inexpensive.  We added it to our list of kitchen goods we wanted to purchase at some point.

Fast-forward to a semi-successful yard sale and now I have a new kitchen compost bin.  It's an Exaco Trading ECO-2000.  It's 2.4 gallons so I should be able to make it a day or so without having to take it out.  Plus, it uses recyclable bags to hold the scraps.  I'm also going to try using paper bags or newspaper inside.  When it's full, I can just tie up the bag for dumping into the composter.  (ok, for Sweet Hubby to dump since there is a big ugly spider in the compost bin.)  The charcoal filter on the top lasts 3 months.  It came with 1 filter so I bought an extra box and a box of bags.

After a several days, 3 bunches of bananas, 4 lbs of strawberries, 10 peaches, 8 nectarines, and 6 russet potatoes, I am really enjoying this pail.  Maybe I shouldn't be enjoying it this much but I am.  It fits nicely in a corner on my counter-top and blends into the shadows well so if you're not looking for it, you wouldn't know it was there. I'm back to being a happy composter again.

***For the record, this is not a paid endorsement or anything of that nature.  I really just like this pail and it fit my meager budget.  I purchased this on my own because I needed a new way of containing my kitchen scraps.  I wanted to share this since I know others might be looking for something similar.  Ok, back to work, people.***
