Back To Getting Their Hands Dirty

When we started our first set of seeds this year, we tried something new.  It didn't make the kids all that happy.  They missed getting to scoop soil, make holes, plant seeds, and cover holes.  Boy Wonder #2 and Girl Wonder #1 especially missed not being able to water the soil cups with their duck watering cans.  I was duly chastened.  Off we went on Saturday to purchase soil and cups.

Filling cheap, recyclable cups with soil and putting them into our holding box.  The good thing about taking our time unpacking is that we always have boxes around for holding seed cups (that's my story and I'm sticking to it.)  Boy Wonder #2 hung around filling 2 cups and then was done.  Boy Wonder #1 invited him to "Ape School" in the tree.  I guess that's more fun than seed starting.

One of Girl Wonder #1's favorite garden jobs is scooping dirt.

Girl Wonder #2 trying to help.  She was happy to hand (and throw) cups to her big sister.

(Sister's busy.  My turn to fill cups.  Take one out of the box, dump it into another cup.  Dump the cup into the empty bucket.  Repeat.  I love dumping dirt.)

Filled with soil, seed type duly noted, and ready for seed planting.

Making holes and putting in seeds.  Girl Wonder #1 put in the big seeds while mommy put in the small seeds.  So far, it worked well.

Her very favorite part of the seed-starting process, watering the newly planted seeds with her duck watering can full of MooPooTea.  She did a great job watering each cup carefully without spilling.

Seed cups filled and ready to grow.  The plastic wrap keeps the moisture in for growing the seeds.

We keep it inexpensive using stuff from the kitchen pantry, good seeds, good soil, and MooPooTea.
