My Very Own Georgia Peaches

Earlier in the month, we took a mini-vacation to the middle of Georgia.  As we wandered about, we stopped for a tour and peaches at Lane Southern Orchards.  The kids had a blast on the tour of the orchards, getting to ride in a small, open-air bus along dirt roads.  Before leaving, we had to get a half bushel of Scarlett Prince peaches.  Not much says summer to a southern girl like fresh, warm, dripping peaches.  I think I ate 4 before we had left the parking lot.  After making peach jam, peach muffins, peach coffee cake, eating peaches, we had a collection of peach pits.

Sweet Hubby wondered if we could grow our own peach trees from these pits.  I went on a hunt for the info.  Turns out, we can (well, we can surely give it a try).  Thanks to some tips from Mother Earth News and Walter Reeves, we're letting our collection dry out for a few weeks.  Then we'll get the pit out.  In the fall, we'll take the next step of putting them into the refrigerator until time to plant.  By then, I'll have re-read the information a few more times so I have the process down in my head.  If we are successful, in a few years, we'll have our own peach trees in the garden.  Woohoo!
