We started some of our fall seeds yesterday. The Wonder Kids were so excited to get the fall seeds started that the Boys Wonder worked on their construction site digging a new pool for the Tonkas. The Girls Wonder stayed to help mommy. And give directions.
Our seeds and starting kit, ready and waiting for naps to finish.
The starter kit has the expandable peat pellets so we poured a generous amount of our MooPooTea into the kit. The Wonder Kids were amazed at the expanding pellets. I had a hard time keeping them from playing with them.
*Note for next year: Go back to our tried-and-true soil-in-cups routine. The Wonder Kids like the pellets but didn't like not being able to scoop up the dirt and poke holes for the seeds. Lesson learned by this mommy.*
Girl Wonder #1 putting in butternut squash seeds. We made an agreement. She and her sister could put in the big seeds (squash, pumpkins, gourds) and mommy would put in the small seeds (broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, collards). They covered all the seeds back up.
Supervising and snacking while mommy retrieved more soil to top off the pellets that didn't expand.
"Are they grown yet, mommy? Where's my squash and broccoli?"
"Maybe if I tell them a story about Curious George growing a garden, they'll grow faster."
The Girls Wonder working together to fill the last 2 rows of cells after singing and storytelling didn't make the broccoli grow fast. I'm pretty sure the pumpkins they're planting got mixed in with the collards and gourds. Girl Wonder #2 was so happy to be putting in seeds, she wanted to use them all in every cell.
Topped off, watered, and ready to be covered for growing time.
Hanging out and ready for action!
I think it is amazing that you include the kids in this growing process. You are a great mommy to teach them so much fun things to do that aren't centered around tv, computer games and toys! Getting back to dirt, fun and family time! That is one of the things I love about you~~
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mari! They certainly enjoy the garden. One of these days we might actually have something they can eat...;)
ReplyDeleteI'm with your kids on the pellets. I think they are boring too. I didn't have that great of success rate either, just starter soil works best for me.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sensiblegardening! After the pellets popped up, they lost interest. With soil cups, they usually stay involved for the whole process. I think we'll be starting more seeds this weekend. They are already asking for the soil cups. We have enough seeds to share so making more starts won't be a problem.
